SPRING IS HERE !!
Monday, September 21, 2009 at 08:18PM With the warm weather comes the pitter-patter of new feet in many homes. More families add a new puppy or dog to their household with the onset of warm weather. It is a fun and exciting time, but once everyone has adjusted to the addition, the question of training must be addressed. Who is going to do the training? Where do we go for training? How should we train the new puppy or dog? There are many questions that need to be answered, but perhaps the one question that many owners struggle with is the type of classes they will enroll their new puppy or dog in.
Should we enroll in a large-group classes or individualized, private instruction? With group lessons there is:
- A lack of individual attention
- Not enough one-on-one instruction
- More work to hold the dog’s attention
- No flexibility in scheduling the class
- An instructor who is working with many dogs, not your dog’s needs
- Lessons set according to a schedule, not the readiness of each dog
However, with private lessons, the benefits far outweigh group lessons.
Private lessons offers:
- One-on-one attention
- Flexibility in both scheduling and working with clients and their dog
- Getting and maintaining the dog’s attention is much easier, there are not distractions from other dogs
- An instructor who addresses the individual needs of the client and their dog
- Each lesson is geared to the needs of the dog
- Dog’s can be taught in short intervals, practice the skill and avoid boredom
- Individual problems or needs are addressed and solved
There is no magic button that can be pressed and your dog will automatically be trained. Making the decision to enroll your dog in any obedience class is one in which you need to consider your needs as well as those of your puppy or dog. Remember that working one-on-one offers the quickest and most effective means of providing training that will be lasting as well as rewarding.
